PROJECT BASIS
-
The basics of the project «Ex situ conservation of biodiversity in aquatic
Ecosystems in Serbia» are derived from the following program activites and tasks imposed by Direction of Environment Protection - Ministry of Environment Protection:
- Biodiversity invertarization in Serbia
- Species endangerment level classification by the international IUCN criteria
- In situ and ex situ conservation of biodiversity
THE PROJECT PRIMARY GOALS ARE
-
The process of biodiversity conservation can be carried out in two different ways: in situ conservation protecting an endangered plant or animal species in its natural habitat and (ex situ)conservation protecting an endangered species by removing part of the population from the threatened habitat and placing it in a new location within the care of humans. Ex situ conservation is nessesary for the critically endangered species or for the species that we are expecting to become extinct in the near future.
The process of ex situ conservation should be carried out by following the list of obligations defined by international agreement-CBD (Convention on Biological Diversity, Rio de Janeiro, 1992)
BASIC PROJECT TASKS
-
Inserting data about attendance and distribution of species in aquatic ecosystems in Serbia (macroalgae, macroinvertebrates and fishes) in special dedicated database, on the basis of bibliography information and information from study.
-
Forming check lists of macroalgae, macroinvertebrates and fishes for aquatic ecosystems in Serbia.
-
Categorization of endanger species in aquatic habitat, by IUCN categories – 2001, version 3.1 , (2001 Categories & Critera, version 3.1) and creation of the National red lists.
-
Identification of aquatic species in need for ex situ conservation by the endanger categories and model developed for estimating the extinct risk of aquatic species on national level (ESHIPPO-PP model). (Simic et al., 2007.)
-
Ex situ treatment of endangered species and other aquatic, and results analyzing.
-
Inserting data from protocols and methods of ex situ conservation of endangered hidrobionts species of national level.
-
Development of internet database named: «Ex situ conservation of biodiversity in aquatic ecosystems in Serbia» (BAES ex situ) and connecting it with international data bases such as: EUNIS, Fauna Europaea, FishBase, IUCN red List, Algaebase i dr).
